Exercise Heart Test — Detect Blocked Arteries

Walk on a treadmill while Dr Grewal monitors your heart in real time. This test detects coronary artery disease and is fully covered by Medicare at both our clinics.

About Stress Echocardiogram

A stress echocardiogram combines exercise on a treadmill with ultrasound imaging of the heart. Images are taken before and immediately after exercise to compare how the heart muscle responds to physical stress.

This test is particularly useful for detecting coronary artery disease (blocked or narrowed arteries), evaluating chest pain that occurs with exertion, assessing heart function in patients with known heart disease, and determining safe exercise levels.

The test is performed and supervised by Dr Jasmin Grewal at our Sydenham, Bundoora or Williams Landing clinic. Dr Grewal monitors your heart rhythm, blood pressure and symptoms throughout the exercise. The entire test is fully bulk billed through Medicare.

What to Expect

Here is what happens before, during and after your stress echocardiogram.

Before Exercise

Electrodes are attached to your chest and a resting echocardiogram is performed. Your resting blood pressure and heart rate are recorded.

During Exercise

You walk on a treadmill with the speed and incline gradually increasing. Dr Grewal monitors your heart rhythm, blood pressure and symptoms throughout. The test continues until you reach your target heart rate or develop symptoms.

After Exercise

Immediately after exercise, another echocardiogram is performed to capture images of your heart while it is still working hard. You then rest while being monitored until your heart rate returns to normal.

How to Prepare

Follow these steps to ensure your stress echocardiogram appointment runs smoothly.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes and loose-fitting clothing
  • Do not eat a heavy meal for 2 hours before the test
  • Continue taking your regular medications unless advised otherwise by your doctor
  • Avoid caffeine on the day of the test
  • Bring your Medicare card and referral
