About CT Coronary Angiogram including Calcium Score

A CT coronary angiogram (CTCA) is an advanced, non-invasive imaging test that uses a specialised CT scanner to produce detailed three-dimensional images of the coronary arteries — the blood vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to your heart muscle. It is one of the most accurate non-invasive methods for detecting coronary artery disease.

This test is often performed together with a coronary artery calcium score (CACS). The calcium score measures the amount of calcified plaque in your coronary arteries and produces a numerical score that helps quantify your risk of future heart events. A score of zero indicates no detectable calcified plaque, while higher scores indicate increasing plaque burden. Combined with the detailed CT angiogram images, this provides a comprehensive picture of your coronary artery health.

This test is particularly useful for evaluating chest pain, assessing patients at intermediate risk of coronary artery disease, investigating abnormal stress test results, and screening patients with risk factors such as family history, high cholesterol, diabetes or smoking. Unlike a traditional catheter angiogram, it does not require insertion of a tube into the arteries.

Dr Jasmin Grewal holds Grade A accreditation in CT coronary angiography — the highest level available — earned during her 2-year cardiac imaging fellowship at The Austin Hospital. She will assess your suitability for the test, provide the referral to a specialist radiology centre, and interpret your results in the context of your overall cardiac health.

What to Expect

Here is what happens before, during and after your ct coronary angiogram including calcium score.

Cardiologist Consultation First

A CT coronary angiogram requires a consultation with a cardiologist and a referral from a cardiologist. During your appointment, Dr Grewal will assess whether this test is appropriate for your clinical situation and whether a calcium score is indicated.

Referral to Specialist Radiology

The scan is performed at a specialist radiology centre equipped with a cardiac-capable CT scanner. This test is not available at all radiology practices — Dr Grewal will refer you to an appropriate facility.

Calcium Score Scan

A quick, low-dose CT scan is performed without contrast dye to measure calcified plaque in your coronary arteries. This produces your calcium score — a number that helps predict your risk of future heart events. No injection is required for this part of the test.

CT Coronary Angiogram Scan

A small amount of contrast dye is injected through a vein in your arm. You lie on a scanning table that passes through the CT machine. The scan itself takes only a few seconds. You may be given medication to slow your heart rate for clearer images.

Results & Follow-Up

Dr Grewal reviews and interprets both your calcium score and the CT angiogram images using her specialist cardiac imaging expertise. She will discuss the findings with you at a follow-up appointment and send a detailed report to your GP.

How to Prepare

Follow these steps to ensure your ct coronary angiogram including calcium score appointment runs smoothly.

  • You must first have a consultation with Dr Grewal to receive a referral for this test
  • Avoid caffeine for 24 hours before the scan
  • You may be asked to take a beta-blocker tablet before the scan to slow your heart rate
  • Do not eat for 4 hours before the scan, but continue drinking water
  • Bring your Medicare card, referral from Dr Grewal, and any previous cardiac test results
  • Inform the radiology centre if you have any allergies, particularly to iodine or contrast dye

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ct coronary angiogram including calcium score at Complete Heart Centre.

Yes. A CT coronary angiogram requires a consultation with a cardiologist and a referral from a cardiologist. You will first need to see Dr Grewal, who will assess whether this test is clinically appropriate for you and provide the referral to a specialist radiology centre.
A coronary artery calcium score (CACS) is a measurement of the amount of calcified plaque in the walls of your coronary arteries. It is obtained from a quick, low-dose CT scan that does not require contrast dye. The result is a numerical score — a score of zero means no detectable calcified plaque, while higher scores indicate greater plaque burden and increased risk of future heart events such as heart attack.
A score of 0 indicates no detectable calcium and very low risk. Scores of 1 to 100 indicate mild plaque and low-to-moderate risk. Scores of 101 to 400 suggest moderate plaque and increased risk. Scores above 400 indicate extensive plaque and high risk of coronary artery disease. Dr Grewal will interpret your score in the context of your age, risk factors, and the detailed CT angiogram images.
The CT coronary angiogram and calcium score are performed at a specialist radiology centre, not at our clinic. This test requires a cardiac-capable CT scanner that is not available at all radiology practices. Dr Grewal will refer you to an appropriate facility.
Yes, it is a safe and well-established test. The calcium score involves a very low dose of radiation and no contrast dye. The CT angiogram involves a small dose of radiation (similar to a standard CT scan) and an injection of contrast dye. Dr Grewal will discuss any risks specific to your situation during your consultation.
A CT coronary angiogram is non-invasive — it does not require a catheter to be inserted into your arteries. Instead, images are captured using an external CT scanner. It is faster, has a shorter recovery time, and carries fewer risks. However, if significant blockages are found, a catheter angiogram may still be needed for treatment.
The consultation with Dr Grewal to assess your suitability and provide the referral is fully bulk billed through Medicare. The CT scan itself is performed at an external radiology centre — costs may vary depending on the provider. Many radiology centres also bulk bill this test with a valid Medicare referral.
A calcium score is particularly valuable for people at intermediate risk of heart disease — for example, those with a family history of coronary artery disease, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, or a history of smoking. Dr Grewal will assess your individual risk profile and advise whether a calcium score is appropriate for you.
Dr Grewal completed a rigorous 2-year cardiac imaging fellowship at The Austin Hospital, one of Melbourne's leading teaching hospitals. She holds Grade A accreditation in CT coronary angiography, which is the highest level of accreditation available for this imaging modality.
